Autobiography

I'm so blessed to have grown up in Leavenworth enjoying winters at Ski Hill, ski jumping and burning holes in my gloves on the rope tow. I moved away to work as a registered nurse for only a few years before Leavenworth called me home to work for the family retail business. Now that my wife and I have a kiddo, we want to see the club thrive so he can enjoy the benefits of time spent outdoors.

Concerning Candidacy

As Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club, I have been dedicated to fostering growth and enhancing operations, including overseeing the exciting bathroom project set to be completed by Fall 2025. Thanks to the incredible support of our community, the club continues to thrive as a hub for outdoor recreation. I am committed to building on this success by collaborating with staff to ensure our venues remain welcoming spaces for both locals and visitors. I look forward to continuing my work in making the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club a cornerstone of our community’s winter experience.

Ben Edwards (incumbent)

Autobiography

Throughout my career I’ve built two things—experiences and communities—often at the same time. I’m always looking at how we all interact with the world around us and how those interactions can be improved. Whether this is how we interact with each other in our communities or how we experience a product or service, I find it all fascinating and am an ardent advocate for improvement when I believe it possible. Outside of my career, I’ve applied my passion to service on the boards of several nonprofit outdoor organizations in the valley. While relatively new to the Leavenworth area (2017) and to the sport of skate skiing (2019), I have been steeped in all manner of winter activity during my upbringing in Minnesota—where there is nearly 6 months of winter to “enjoy”.

Concerning Candidacy

I think there is a foundation for a great community here around outdoor activities and I believe my experience in catalyzing and strengthening communities will has helped in my tenure as an existing LWSC board member. I have enjoyed my time getting to know and working with the board and staff for the past 3 years.

I am excited to be helping lead up the strategic panning process for the organization for the past 9 months and look forward to completing that work and getting the plan implemented later this year. Additionally, I look forward to helping direct improvements to the fundraising activities for the club as part of a new fundraising committee.

Autobiography

I was initially drawn to this town in 2010 for its proximity to the mountains and its outdoor recreation, but I’ve stayed for its community. Now days you can most often find me at the Ski Hill having fun on the slopes with my daughter, but we also frequent the Icicle River Trails and the Golf Course on either classic or skate. Previously, I have worked as a Mission Ridge patroller, as a LWSC big tow operator/ ski patroller/ cocoa machine operator, and an assistant high school ski race coach while in graduate school at Oregon State. My career is in environmental science, and I currently work for Chelan County. It has been an exciting and evolving time for LWSC and amazing to see our community members come together at the Lodge. The Club has been an integral part of my community and working to keep LWSC vibrant and strong for future generations has been my honor.

Concerning Candidacy

I would like to continue being a board member for LWSC to follow through with the many ongoing projects that I am currently involved with. I am currently the secretary for the LWSC board and I am working on cleaning up our digital files and digital structure of our operations, as well as working on a new board member onboarding package. Both of these tasks will make succession of board members and key staff more efficient in the future. I am member of the restroom committee and I would like to see this project through as it just about to break ground! I have been working with the strategic planning committee; this is an exciting time for the club, as board members are working diligently to have a strategic plan in place this year including an annual operating budget. As a member of the grants committee I would like to continue my work on writing grants for the next phase of capital improvements at Ski Hill - think Ski Hill Lodge renovation. I consider myself a creative problem solver as well as finically conservative. I would like to continue using those attributes to propel LWSC into the future with a balanced operational budget and grant funded capital improvements.

Autobiography

I grew up in a small town in Maine and learned to ski at a small ski area with my dad and brother, where I developed a lifelong interest in winter sports. In 2012, I moved to Leavenworth, drawn to the small-town community and the opportunity to raise my kids in an active, outdoor environment. My two boys grew up learning to ski at Ski Hill and participated on the alpine team, where I had the privilege of coaching them for several years.

My career has been deeply rooted in the ski industry, with 20 years of experience in sales, marketing, and resort operations. I spent four years running world-class events at Killington in Vermont and eight years on the Leadership Team at Stevens Pass, where I helped establish the Academic Excellence Program - providing free season passes to Cascade School District students as an incentive for academic performance.

For the past four years, I’ve served as the Director of Business Operations for Syndicate Smith. Outside of work, I’m an avid trail runner and backpacker, enjoying time in the mountains with my family and friends. I’m enthusiastic about supporting our local ski community and would love the opportunity to serve on the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club board.

Concerning Candidacy

My family has been enjoying Ski Hill for over a decade, and I truly believe it’s one of the best places on earth. When my kids were younger, they’d spend the entire day at ski hill with friends – flying off the airplane jump, eating baskets of fries at the lodge, and figuring out their own way home when they were done. It gave them independence and a deep love for winter, and to me, that sense of freedom and community is what makes Leavenworth such an incredible place to raise a family.

I’d love the opportunity to give back by serving on the board. Over the years, I’ve been involved in many ways—coaching on the alpine team, volunteering at Bakke Cups, helping with trail maintenance, running the jump hill, and pitching in on cleanup days. I know every board member shares a passion for this place, as they should. What I bring to the table is 20 years of leadership experience in ski resort operations, along with strong planning and organizational skills. I’m also known as a thoughtful person and a good listener - someone who works well with others to get things done. I’d be honored to help support and shape the future of Ski Hill.
